Countdown to Halloween With an Advent Calendar

Advent calendars are traditionally associated with Christmas as the young and the old excitedly count down the days to this magical time. However, Christmas isn't the only holiday which is quickly approaching as Halloween is now just around the corner.

Every year, more people are celebrating with carved pumpkins decorating front gardens, excited children trick or treating and fancy dress parties becoming increasingly popular. Why not add a little excitement to the Halloween countdown with your own advent calendar? Although you are unlikely to find one of these in any of the shops, it is very easy to make your own with just a few simple materials. A little bit of cardboard, whatever decorations you want, glue dots, something to fill your calendar with and a little bit of creativity is all that's required.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

The first step is to plan what kind of calendar you want and how you want to design it. For example, do you want to put chocolates behind the doors, little presents or just pictures? You can then think about what picture you want on your calendar from pumpkins, ghosts, witches, monsters, vampires or anything else Halloween like. Once this has been done you can decide whether you want to keep your advent calendar simple or add glitter, stickers and other decorations. Pre - planning all of this makes it much easier when it comes to buying your equipment as you're more likely to remember everything from brightly coloured pens to glue dots.

If you feel that your artistic skills leave a lot to be desired then you can cheat and simply print out an image from the internet. You can then either leave it as it is or use glue dots to add some funky decorations to make it a bit more personalised. You can do the same with the chocolates if this is what you choose to put in your Halloween advent calendar. You can either buy some which have been already made from the shop or you can make your own. Making your own chocolate can be handy as you can use different moulds, add different ingredients and can even be made dairy free for vegans.

One popular method of making advent calendars is to design the main image on a separate piece of paper and then when it's finished sticking it onto the cardboard with something such as glue dots. This means that if you make a mistake or change your mind about the design you want it's not a problem as you can simply use a new sheet of paper.

Not only does creating your own advent calendar add to the fun of Halloween, but it's also a great way of keeping track of what the date is. Every morning when you open up a door you are reminded of the date which makes it much easier to remember. This way you can ensure that you always know exactly how many days it is until one of the most thrilling days of the year.
