Ten Halloween Costume Ideas You Can Use to Spook Up Your Night

Looking for some original Halloween costume ideas you can use to break away from the typical costumes you see? Then you've come to the right place as we've compiled a list of our top ten favorite Halloween costume ideas for you to choose from. Use one of the ideas you find here, and you're sure to be a hit at your big holiday bash!

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

Cereal Killer

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

This Halloween costume idea is easy to create. A few miniature cereal boxes from your local grocer (with the cereal removed) are glued to an old t-shirt or sweatshirt. Use fake blood to make it look as though each box is "bleeding", and stick a plastic knife through the centre of each box with more fake blood for effect.

Driver's License

A large piece of white poster board and some markers are all you'll need for this Halloween costume idea. Using your own driver's license as a template, recreate the face of your license leaving a blank box where your face should go. Once your "license" looks right, cut an oval-shaped hole in the blank area you left so that you can easily fit your face through. Et voila! Instant Driver's License Halloween costume!

Costumes For Expecting Women

Why should pregnant women get left out of the festivities? We've seen quite a few creative Halloween costume ideas for expecting women over the years, and following are our two favourites:

Cat In The Hat - Straight out of the Dr. Seuss tales, Cat In The Hat costumes are available from most costume stores. The trick to this Halloween costume idea is to cut and hem a hole right in the centre of the belly of the costume, just large enough for your expecting tummy to protrude. Once your costume has been modified, use non-toxic face paints or tempera paints to create the fish bowl from the story on your tummy. Black Cat With Jack-o'-Lantern - In much the same fashion as the last, a simple black cat costume is modified to accommodate your growing stomach. But instead of a fishbowl, use your paints to paint a jack-o'-lantern on your tummy.
Whichever of the above Halloween costume ideas you decide to use, be sure to get lots of pictures as they are a part of your baby's life you'll treasure forever!

Money Tree

This Halloween costume idea is really simple to create. Dress in a pair of brown corduroy slacks, with a dark green sweat shirt. Pin fake dollar bills all over the shirt, including the sleeves and back. You can also find a green stocking hat to pin fake dollars on to complete the effect.

Historical & Mythical Costumes

Historical and mythical Halloween costume ideas are great as well, especially for couples looking to be something other than a pair of bats or vampires. Some of the most creative costumes we've seen include:

Marie Antoinette Elvis & Marilyn Monroe Marc Anthony & Cleopatra Peter an & Wendy
Dinner Table

This is one of our favourite Halloween costume ideas. All you need can be gotten from your favourite craft store for just a few dollars. A cardboard box large enough to fit over your head and shoulders, a plain white tablecloth you don't mind cutting a hole in, some tin foil and wax fruits and foods are all you need. Cut a hole in the bottom of the box large enough for your head to fit through comfortably, then draping the tablecloth over the box repeat the procedure. Some spray adhesive will keep the tablecloth attached to the box.

Using the tin foil, create a "dinner plate" that will fit around the hole, and glue your wax foods onto the plate. If you like, you can also glue several paper plates, plastic cups and plastic tableware around the perimeter of the box to look like it's been set for company.

The Halloween Toga Costume

Toga costumes are not so obvious a choice for Halloween but for simplicity you can't beat them. Since the days of John Belushi and the Animal House movie, these costumes have become associated with college Toga parties all over the world. But that's no reason not to consider as a viable choice for Halloween - maybe with a few twists.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

Forget The Old Sheet Idea

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

White is the most common color for toga costumes because people commonly throw on an old sheet they have lying around the house. However, sheets aren't the best material to use as their shape is too square. You are better off with a long and narrow strip of fabric. Also, if you don't have old sheets lying around you'll find that it's usually cheaper to buy a piece of cloth from a store than it is to buy a new sheet. So, all in all, buying some cloth from a fabric store is a better option.

Go For A Length Of Fabric

Most instructions for making a toga recommend that you buy between 4 and 6 yards of fabric. Most people find that 4 yards is sufficient but obviously it will depend upon your size and how sure you want to be of covering your bits! Allow for 3 feet of cloth to wrap around your waist. If you're working with a toga that starts from the waist and goes over the shoulder, you'll need to wrap it around one and a half times and then have fabric to spare to throw over your shoulder. A good rule of thumb is to buy about 1 yard of fabric per foot of the wearer's height, taking 6 yards as the maximum.

To make the toga more suitable for Halloween you could choose an orange or black fabric or one of those patterns that comes out specifically at this time of year - a pumpkin or witch design for example.

Assembling Your Halloween Toga Costume

The next consideration for your toga costume is what you are going to wear underneath it. If, anything! Long t-shirts and shorts are usually a good idea, especially if, like me, you live in a colder climate. Also, you'll be free to revel as much as you like without fear of your costume falling off at an inopportune moment.

The Man's Toga Firstly, pin one end of the cloth securely around your waist. Then wrap it round least one more time, leaving the length hanging down to your knees. Pin the toga again at the waistline so that it stays in position. Throw the rest of the fabric over one of your shoulders and, apart from a few accessories, you're ready to go.

Complete your outfit with leather sandals, wrist bands made from cardboard, a corded belt around your waist in which to stash a plastic sword, a shield and a laurel leaf crown also easily made from a piece of cardboard.

The Woman's Toga Creating a toga costume for a woman is similar to that of a man's but begins under the armpits rather than the waist. Start by pinning the material just under the armpits ensuring that the cloth hangs down to the knees. Wrap your fabric around your body again and pin into place making sure the fabric is secure. Drape the remaining cloth over your shoulder and your toga is ready to acessorize.

Take advantage of your feminine shape by using small horizontal bands made from chain, leather or ribbon to accentuate your bust (using a criss-cross) and your waistline. Wear high-heeled shoes if you're comfortable in them.

Whether male or female, adding orange and black touches will ensure your toga costume has a Halloween flavor.

Traditional Christmas Tree Decor

The two most traditional styles of christmas tree décor are Country and Victorian. The Victorian style of christmas tree décor is definitely more expensive than the Country style, which can be created from cheaper decorations, fabrics and materials. On the other hand the Victorian style is older and is very well suited to the corner christmas tree or the tall slim artificial christmas tree.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

The country style of christmas tree décor is definitively American and actually didn't come into style until the 19th century. The look of this tree is rounder and fuller than the Victorian style. It incorporates the chubbier look of a natural pine. However any kind of fir tree is used as a Christmas tree in the United States.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

If you like the look of the chubbier country style christmas tree but it is too big to fit into your space, then you can consider buying an artificial corner tree that looks like a pine. It is the fatter, squatter girth that you are looking for when you shop for this and christmas tree decorations online. However remember that for the tree to be truly rustic it should be a real one! You can get a real tree delivered to your door in time for xmas at http://www.hammacher.com.

The key to creating your own country style christmas tree décor is to think in terms of the traditional colors of red and green. For a truly authentic effect don't use tiny twinkling mini lights, rope lights or fiber optic lights to light up this tree. Nothing will do but the old fashioned, vintage style red, green, blue and yellow egg shaped lights. At the very least try to use red and green lights.

The christmas tree décor for a country style tree is quite rustic. The materials that are used to decorate this type of tree are usually made of wood, tin, stuffed toys, velvet, ribbon, glass and tinsel.

Wooden ornaments can include items such as miniature sleighs, replicas of food and carved figures of Santa and Elves. Shiny red painted wooden apples are especially associated with this country style. When shopping for Christmas decorations online or at the mall, remember the glass christmas balls that you choose should be red and green in color. They should also be shiny rather than frosted metal to accomplish the look.

Tinsel, both in the form of garlands and icicles are also very much part of the traditional American country style christmas tree décor. You can buy furry looking tinsel garlands in white, red or green and wrap them around the tree in a spiral. Silver tinsel icicles should be hung in clumps at the ends of the boughs.

Velvet red bows and plaid ribbon bows tied to the boughs also give an xmas tree that old country feel. Plush toys such as teddy bears or stuffed santas can also be hung from the tree by a thread as a decoration. You can find a lot of these types plush or rustic style wooden ornaments when shopping for christmas ornaments online.

This type of tree also incorporates homemade baked goods in its décor. Ginger bread men and teddy bears make a nice compliment to the color of the dark green branches of the xmas tree. Popcorn strung on a garland is also a very traditional country look.

Traditionally the topper for this type of tree is a Christmas star of some sort. The classic home-made version is a cut out star made out of cardboard and wrapped in tin foil. However you can find all kinds of different versions of the xmas star when you go shopping for christmas decorations online - everything from the blinking electronic contraptions to stars made of feathers and tinsel.

By contrast, the Victorian style of christmas tree décor looks best on the tallest tree that you can find. This English style of tree decorating originated with Queen Victoria at the turn of the last century. The taller and slimmer the christmas tree the better.

Certain types of christmas tree confiers definitely suit the Victorian style more accurately than others. The taller slimmer trees include the spruce and the balsam fur. Victorian style trees are not as spindly as the rounder American style trees and show very little white space through their branches. Also the color of Victorian trees tend to have a bit of a blue tint to their green branches. Keep this in mind if you are shopping for an artificial or corner christmas tree.

Victorian christmas tree décor tends to be very detailed. The main topical theme is angels, birds, animals, portraits and musical instruments. Decorations can be conical, spherical and globular. These types of decorations are commonly made of tin and glass. The idea here is quantity. A Victorian christmas tree is allowed to look more cluttered so the idea is to hang it with as many tinier decorations as you can.

The color scheme of Victorian xmas décor is also a little different from the American style tree. Although red and green can play a part colors such as gold and silver should be much more predominant. Pink, blue and lavender ornaments are also much more common on a Victorian styled tree than an American country style one.

Crystal drops, similar to the ones you see hanging on chandeliers, hung on evergreen branches are also part of traditional Victorian christmas tree décor. You can buy plastic versions of these in craft stores and attach them to the tree with wired gold ribbon.

Victorian trees, like the American country style, also tend to be generously draped in tinsel and bows. Ribbons in gold, silver, pink and lavender distinguish the tree as being more English, rather than American in style.

The lights that you hang on a Victorian style tree should look like miniature candles. There are many sites that specialize in novelty christmas lights that look like white wax candles in candle holders. One of these is [http://www.hammacher.com.If] you decide not to go with the candle holder lights as a theme, tiny blue and yellow lights simulate the glow of true candlelight when hung in this tree.

Another common component of the Victorian tree is fake snow. This stuff, called "flocking" comes in a spray can. It is used to frost the branches of the tree so it looks like it is covered in a sifting of freshly fallen snowflakes.

You don't have to be English or American to prefer one kind of style of christmas tree decor over another. What this all boils down to is a matter of personal and perhaps how high your ceiling is and whether or not you can squeeze a fatter tree in your space. However if you buy a corner christmas tree that is artificial, none of this will be an issue.

Kid's Party Planning - The Princess Birthday Party

In the world of kid's party planning, the princess party is often requested by many little girls for their birthday party celebration. Lucky for us, the princess party theme has a lot of creative options and is great fun for adults, too.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

So, if you are thinking of planning a princess party, here are a few ideas to help you create the perfect, magical celebration.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

Royal Invitations

Invitations can be printed or handwritten on parchment paper. Roll each invitation and fastened with a ribbon or an "official" gold seal. Additional invitation ideas include anything with a playful dragon, a royal castle or even a a royal princess crown.

Decorations - Pink and Glittery

The most popular theme color for a princess party is pink. If you are also inviting a few dashing knights to the celebration, you might want to also add either white or black for a bit of a masculine touch.

For a dramatic entrance, create a castle guests must pass through to enter the party. To create the castle, begin with a large card board box (refrigerator or appliance boxes are perfect) and spray paint it gray. Cut turrets on around the top of box, a few arched windows and add a flag. Cut a hole in the cardboard for the door and add a piece of carpet or a rug for the magic path which leads everyone into the birthday party kingdom.

For the birthday girl, create a "princess throne", a chair decorated with flowers, extra balloons, a large bow and any sparkly, princess details you find. Use pink tablecloth, streamers, glittery stars or confetti to decorate the table.

Final touches for the "royal feast" can include plastic goblets or champagne glasses and fancy disposable, silver colored utensils.

Royal Games and Activities

The princess theme is great because there are so many different activities and games which can be easily incorporated into the party. For games, there's pin the wings on the dragon, pin the crown on the princess, pin the sword on the knight or countless other variations of "pin the tail on the donkey" type games.

Craft ideas are a lot of fun because guests not only have lots of fun creating them, but crafts can be also used as party decorations. For example:

Plastic goblets and champagne glass can be decorated with rhinestones, sticker or glitter glue. Glasses become part of the table decorations and can also be a party favor.

Princess Wands and Crown: decorate foam wands or crowns from your local craft supplies stores with beads, rhinestones, glitter glue pens, stickers or self-adhesive felt heart and flowers. If there are knights attending the celebration, offer cardboard shield, sword or a crown to decorate and add a few knightly touches such as animal stickers to use for the family crest.

Another craft idea is to make princess necklaces or bracelets. Use stretchy plastic cord instead of a thin silk cord. Offer several bowls of colorful beads of all shapes and sizes for guests to create their masterpieces. Again, anything glittery or pink are great colors for supplies and the chunkier the beads, the better.

Treasure hunt or scavenger hunts: provide clues to help guest find the princess's missing items hidden throughout the kingdom. For younger children use a simple version of the game, but older children may enjoy a little more challenge. Prizes can be either the hidden item or guest can select from a secret treasure chest of goodies such as extra ornaments for their crown or swords, Mardi Gras beads, sparkly nail polish or other inexpensive goodies.

Princess parties are a wonderful because they allow for a lot of playfulness, imagination, creativity and fun. Decorations need not be expensive or games elaborate because the kids get caught up in the magic and story of the princess party theme. So take lots of photos and enjoy the opportunity to indulge yourself and your guests in an afternoon of pure imagination and fun.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

In other ships scrolls we've given ye ideas on creating yarrgh invitations and on how to make 'em the best around and now we're goin' to tell ye how to make the venue for yarrgh party look fantastic and give yarrgh some ideas on how to amuse yarrgh little scallywags until it's time for 'em to walk that there plank to 'ome.

Pirate Decoration Themes
Having adopted a pirate theme for your party, you have three options for the decoration theme. The first - and by far the most popular - is the Treasure Island. Next we have the Pirate Boat and lastly - and probably better for adults so not covered here - is the portside Inn. Once you've identified which theme your going to follow it's time to get working on transforming your venue and here are a few tips;

Treasure Island
The degree of realism will depend on whether you are indoors or outside. If you are lucky enough to be outside you could create a real island with a pile of sand which can be placed on some sand coloured cardboard to protect the surface. You can extend the cardboard to create the whole island by taping it together using strong tape on both sides and then when you have an area big enough to hold all of your little pirates, it can either be shaped to resemble the island outline or the remainder painted in blue to resemble the sea. You can mix some sand with the paint in-order to get a textured finish. To get enough cardboard you can ask your local supermarket for some cardboard boxes and then cut these open and join them together. This idea also works well for an indoor island.

On the edge of your island you may want to add some inflatable sharks and you could extend the sea up your walls by hanging some blue sheets or crepe paper and then attaching some pirate ship cutouts and fish.

To decorate your island you need some inflatable palm trees, a collection of various sized boxes, paint some as treasure chests others as packing cases - these can be stacked for best effect. To create a packing case, seal the box and then paint it all over with a light brown colour. Using a thin paintbrush create the slat effect horizontally around the case. If you want to you can create the shadow lines about 2" from the top and bottom for the lid and base covers - alternatively these can be constructed simply from 2"x1" wood cut to length and then screwed (from the inside) to box. Adding a washer to the inside prevents the batten being ripped off too easily. Double sided tape on the outside also works well. These battens can be painted. To all painted surfaces, using a marker create knotholes and a wood grain effect. Stack the completed packing cases for the best effect.

Add some coils of rope and barrels if you can find any. Add some plastic pirate rum bottles or an assortment of bottles to complete the scene. Bottles can be made from paper mache (a mixture of torn newspaper and paste) which can then be applied to a wine bottle which has been previously smeared with Vaseline. Build up layers of paper mache but keep the shape of the bottle and leave the bottom uncovered - so that the bottle can slid out. Leave to dry. When dry slip the fake bottle from the real bottle and repeat the process as many times as required. Level the base (so they stand) and paint as you wish incorporating skull and crossbones etc into your design. If you want the bottle to lie on their sides or be propped up, add a circle of card as a base attached with tape or more paper mache strips. This is best done before painting. For an authentic look, drip a coloured candle wax over the top of the bottle to represent the seal.

If you are inside and looking for an craft project for your party, make loads of fake bottles in advance and paint them the basic colour. With lots of paper spread out, get your guests to decorate their own bottle - the painted result can also be part of their party bag at the end.

If you have a tree or post available, attach lengths of bunting from this to various points around the edge. If indoors use the bunting across the room. The bunting can either be homemade using colourful rectangles of plain material attached to some binding or can be bought pirate bunting.

Pirate Ship
The Pirate Ship will require a little more thought and lots of cardboard. The easiest solution is to create just a part of the ship out of cardboard - one of the cabins. Using cardboard taped together, create a large box shape - depending on the size you may want to incorporate some wooden supports, paint the whole structure in brown and the outline the planks and nail heads in black. Create planks of different lengths just like in a real ship. Cut windows in the sides and decorate around the windows as much as you want - it helps to download a picture of a pirate galley as a template.

You can extend to the front of the structure with more cardboard painted like planks and this can for the deck of the boat. Around the edge you could paint a sea blue - see above. Decorate the deck of your pirate boat with treasure chest, packing boxes, barrels, bottles and ropes as outlined for the Treasure Island. If you are outdoors, then you could add a tall pole to the back of the structure to create a mast from which you could attach your bunting to symbolize sails. If you are indoors bring the bunting in from the corners of the room to the centre above the cabin.

Neither of these decoration themes can be achieved in 5 minutes. Each will take some thought and some planning to produce the best results, but there is nothing to prevent you starting to construct decorative items well in advance, the packing cases and pirate bottles can be made at anytime and will store indefinitely proving they are kept dry. In fact they will last for years and many parties and like Halloween, you could add to them as time goes on.

Having created the perfect decorated party venue for your pirate scallywags, don't forget to include the fact that you expect all of your guests to come to the party in pirate fancy dress.

Holiday Crafts For Kids - Five Easy Ideas

Kids love to help us parents get ready for the holidays. Here are five easy craft projects to help your home look more festive than ever.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

Some of these craft projects are best enjoyed together. Others will keep your kids happy and occupied as you do your own holiday preparations.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

1. Make a turkey (or other centerpiece) from natural items.
This craft is fun for everyone, and very eco-friendly. Take your kids on a nature walk or a simple walk through the local grocery store. Pick items for different parts of the turkey. Pine cones and leaves can form the body and feathers of the turkey, for example. Or, if you are in the supermarket, choose different sized gourds and corn leaves. Glue the pieces together using craft glue or use some toothpicks, depending on the age of your children.

2. Beaded bracelets
Beaded bracelets can be used for a wide variety of different holidays. This project is also very adaptable to any age group. Preschoolers can use pipe cleaners and pony beads to create easy bracelets. Older children can string pony beads on plastic lace. Pre-teens can use a needle, thread and seed beads. Pick colors related to the holiday that you are preparing for. For example, gold, red and brown can create festive Thanksgiving bracelets. Red, green, silver and gold are perfect for Christmas and blue and silver will be great for Hanukkah.

3. Gingerbread houses
This yearly treat is fun for everyone. There are gingerbread house kits available that have everything you need for a simple house, or you can create your own. Using graham crackers, cream cheese frosting or white icing, gum drops, licorice and other pieces of candy you can create your own designs. Be creative with your items and you'll have totally unique gingerbread houses.

4. Gift tags
These craft projects are practical and fun, too. There are so many different ways you can create gift tags that you can make some with whatever you have on hand. Use cardboard, tag board or decorative paper and cut out squares, circles, ovals and unique shapes. Your children can use stamps to create the designs on the tags using appropriate holiday colors and designs. They can also use markers to draw their own designs. Use sequins, glitter, bits of ribbon and stickers, too. Older kids can put "to" and "from" information on the back of the tags.

5. Felt projects
A few sheets of felt, some scissors and some glue are all you need to create a great variety of holiday crafts year round. White felt circles, a top hat and some beads are all you need for some felt snowmen. Green felt tree shapes, yellow stars and beads make an easy craft. Yellow felt stars can be jazzed up with some gold glitter. This craft is only limited by your imagination and your children's skill level.

These craft projects are easily adaptable to any age level and will make the holidays even more fun for everyone.

The Superiority of Homemade Halloween Costumes

Halloween costume contests are never won by store-bought costumes, no matter how well made or unique. Homemade Halloween costumes are simply more impressive. Those triumphant homemade costumes show far better creativity, crafting skill and most of all, effort. The costume can really be quite simple, as long as the idea behind the costume is clever. Homemade Halloween costumes based on puns score extra points.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

I entered into my first Halloween costume contest at the age of five, alongside my two sisters. We were dressed as crayons thanks to a touch of craftiness from our mother. To make the crayon costumes, she measured around our bodies, cut out tubes of felt and affixed Velcro at the back. The tubes covered from chest to feet with short and simple suspenders sewn onto the felt. Crayon point hats were created with the help of a cardboard triangle glued into a funnel shape and covered with felt. Black felt supplied the "Crayola" and squiggles at each end.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

The brilliant thing about our homemade Halloween costumes is that they were so easy to make but looked quite adorable (if I do say so myself). The felt tubes were quick to toss on over coordinating clothes and were quite comfortable, important requirements for impatient trick-or-treaters. Requiring only felt, Velcro, scissors and glue, they were also cheap for Mom. Any kid or adult could immediately identify our costume, which indulged such a pinnacle kid favorite. While we did not win the costume contest that year, we still have these homemade Halloween costumes made so many years ago.

Those crayons will always be first in my heart, but I have seen many great homemade Halloween costumes over the years. Groups of people seem to be a contributing factor in great homemade Halloween costumes. A group of costumed people creating a Halloween theme together just compounds the cute, just like with puppies. One year, a group of my friends went as Tetris pieces that actually fit together. A series of cardboard boxes and paint provided all the materials. Painting and assembling those boxes might have been more fun than the Halloween party we wore them.

Another year, we decided on a rather dark yet nerdy Halloween party theme, Dead Authors. With such a specific topic, homemade Halloween costumes were absolutely essential. We had a prize for the best costume, a collapsible ping-pong table made out of scrap wood salvaged by my engineer roommate. Extra points were given to dead author costumes incorporating how the authors died. The best and winning costume was Sylvia Plath who constructed an oven around her head with a clear, swinging door and knobs. I dressed as Virginia Woolf, filling my cardigan pockets with rocks.

Sure, our dead author costumes were dark, perhaps even a touch disrespectful, but they were also funny. They commemorated the darker side of these authorial geniuses. More importantly, they were creative and encouraged everyone to make something with their hands. For students accustomed to reading and writing all day long, the homemade Halloween costumes were strangely therapeutic.

Make your own homemade Halloween costumes this year.

Lollipop Centerpieces

Lollipop centerpieces have so many things going for them. First of all, they can be absolutely beautiful, especially when accented with ribbons and bows. Second, they can support most any theme because these days you can purchase lollipops in practically any shape and design. And third, they can also function as your party favor, saving you money while still sending your guests home with a wonderful, not to mention delicious, party favor.

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

Making your own lollipop centerpieces couldn't be easier. Here are some things to keep in mind to help you create centerpieces that will wow your guests:

Cardboard Halloween Decorations

- Vases can be inexpensively purchased at any craft store such as Michaels. Even supermarkets that have a flower department typically sell inexpensive glass vases, typically less than per vase. Look for vases that have a indented 'neck' to them so that you can easily tie a satin or organza ribbon around that section.

- If you choose not to put the lollipops in a vase you can also purchase floral foam and stick your lollipops in them and then put the foam in a box of some sort. You can actually use simple cardboard boxes and wrap them in pretty gift wrapping paper that compliments the theme or colors of your party. Then cover the foam with colorful paper shreds or tissue and it will look terrific!

- Make sure that each lollipop is individually packaged in cellophane and preferably tied with a ribbon in a color that compliments your party decor.

- To really make your lollipop centerpiece stand out choose lollipops that are wrapped with personalized ribbon (usually satin); not only is it beautiful but it also dresses up and personalizes the edible centerpiece.
