Five Cheap or Free Halloween Costumes You Can Make in Minutes

Dressing up for Halloween is something most children (and many adults) look forward to all year. If you head to the store to buy your costume, it can get expensive quickly. By applying a little imagination, it's possible to save piles of money putting together a great Halloween costume with things you may already have at home. In this article, I'm going to share five ideas for cheap or free costumes you can put together yourself in under an hour.

1. The Candy Bar - Halloween is all about candy, so why not dress as your favorite candy bar? All you have to do is grab the art supplies and draw or paint the wrapper design on two large piece of cardboard. Attach some arm straps and you're all set. Optionally, you can add some brown pants and a top to be extra chocolicious.

2. The Graduate - If you've still got your cap and gown gathering dust in the closet, break it out. Wrap a rolled up sheet of drawing paper in the cord from your curtains and you're good to go. If this is an idea you or your child like but you don't have a cap and gown, many thrift stores have them for a few bucks and they've only been worn once!

3. FBI Agent - All this takes is combining dark clothing with sunglasses and a wallet where you can stash a homemade FBI ID to flash whenever possible. Hair should be slicked or tied back to be extra intimidating. Bonus points if you can add a blazer and tie.

4. Cowboy/Cowgirl - Have a cowboy hat laying around the house? Grab that and add a flannel shirt and some jeans and you're done. Cowboy boots add some extra kick, but if you don't have them or don't have time to run to the thrift store for a pair, just tell people you're an urban cowboy. For a variant on this, stick a star on your chest (cut one out of paper) and make yourself sheriff.

5. Chalk Body Outline - Dress head-to-toe in black (include gloves and a black stocking cap if you want to be completely authentic). Outline your entire body with masking tape. If someone asks you what you are, lie down and show them. This costume can be extra-funny if you go out on Halloween with someone dressed as an FBI agent.

Most people have things in their home that, with a little imagination, can make Halloween a lot easier on the pocketbook. These are five ideas to illustrate that you don't have to pull out your wallet to have fun on Halloween. Sometimes saving money is just a matter of looking at what you already have and thinking of new ways to use it.

Bunnies & chicks, colourful eggs, and the hunt for hidden chocolate. It's no wonder kids await the arrival of Easter with such eager anticipation. While many families have their own private rituals to celebrate this springtime holiday, this year consider throwing an Easter party for friends and family. Wondering how? Just follow these tips for foolproof egg hunts, crafts and races to entertain your guests, and tasty treats to entice your tireless hunters to the table. This party plan is sure to please.

The egg hunt is the highlight of most Easter parties. However, how do you ensure even the smallest hunters get their fair share of the eggs? Here are some time-tested tips:

o Put the participants' names on the eggs in advance, and/or assign a colour to each child, if using plastic eggs.

o Assign different search areas based on age. Smaller children's eggs might be in plain view, while others are harder to find.

Looking to add a twist? Here are some variations on the traditional hunt:

o Instead of chocolate eggs, use jellybeans to add difficulty.

o Use hollow plastic eggs, each with a small treat such as a candy, temporary tattoo, a few coins, or even a clue to a larger prize.

o Working alone or in teams, each solves clues leading to other clues, and eventually to the Easter treats. Have different clue trails for each child or team.

o Have the kids hide the eggs and make the parents look for them

Activities

Keep the excitement going after the hunt by trying out some of these games:

o Egg Bowling. Using colored hard-boiled eggs and one white, roll the white one onto the lawn or rug, and see who can roll their coloured egg the closest.

o An "Egg-citing" Obstacle Course. A variation of the egg & spoon race, teams navigate their way around and through various obstacles without dropping their eggs. If an egg drops off your spoon, you can start again, or do an agreed upon penalty, such as five jumping jacks or singing a silly song.

o Egg Roll. Using only their noses, people must roll an egg across the finish line, five to ten feet away. This also makes a good relay.

Food

By now, your little guests will no doubt be ready for a snack. In addition to any other delicious treats you plan, let them decorate an Easter Basket Cupcake. Here's how:

You'll need:

o cupcakes (one per person, but a few extra are a good idea)

o your favourite homemade or prepared frosting

o shredded coconut (preferably green or yellow)

o colourful jellybeans

o pipe cleaners (one per cupcake)

o plastic knives

Using a plastic knife, have the kids frost the top of their cupcakes. Next sprinkle coconut around the outside edges of the cupcake, leaving the middle clear. Then, place several jellybeans in the middle. Finally, bend pipe cleaners into U-shapes, and poke the ends into the cupcakes to form basket's handles. Enjoy!

Easter Egg Art

Then, with only a few inexpensive craft supplies from the store or around your house, give a twist on the traditional colouring of eggs with these ideas:

o Marbleized Eggs. Add 1-tablespoon of vegetable oil to your egg dye. Lightly stir and immediately dip your egg into the liquid and remove. Let dry and repeat the process with another colour for interesting effects.

o Egg Animals. Go beyond dipping and dyeing by creating colourful critters out of your eggs. Use craft supplies to create pipe cleaners legs and horns, pom-pom noses, paper ears, googlie-eyes, feathers and more. Markers also work well. White glue or a low-temperature glue gun works well with some supervision. Themes might include barnyard animals, creatures from outer space, or even family members. Have a contest and take lots of pictures.

o Eggshell Mosaics. Need a use for those cracked or broken coloured eggs from your relays? Break up the eggshells into pieces that are small enough to lie flat, but not so small they are hard to handle. Sort into piles by colour. On a thin piece of cardboard, draw a simple design with a dark pen or marker. Spread a thin coat of white glue onto part of the design, and fill it in with eggshell pieces. Continue until the design is complete. Try not to cover up your outline. Let it dry overnight and enjoy.

Whether you decide to entertain just your family, your friends, or invite the entire neighbourhood, everyone is sure to enjoy themselves at your "egg-stra" special Easter party.

Plan Your Own Penant Race: Baseball Theme Parties Are Fun For All Ages

Whether you are planning a party for adults or children, throwing a baseball theme party can be a great deal of fun. First of all, create two teams from your own imagination and design a logo for each. There are some free logo creators available on your computer that you can use. Then, purchase shirts in contrasting colors. By purchasing some iron-on sheets that feed through your printer you can then design your own team t-shirts. It will be a pennant race of your own design as you plan team sport activities for your guests to compete in.

Baseball theme party decorations are available from most party suppliers, with the best selection of course being found at the on-line supply stores. Add a few pennants of your own team designs to the ones commercially available to add a personal dimension to your party decorations.

To play the games, have each team designate pitchers, catchers, and a single batter before even knowing what the games are. Games will include a baseball throwing station. Have several hoops of various sizes that your team pitchers must throw baseballs through. You can use wiffle balls to make it really hard, or you can use regular softball or baseballs. Hoops can be made of hula hoops, tires, cardboard targets, paper plates (which holes cut out) or just about anything. Just plan your point awards according to the size of the hole you want them to get the ball through. Give each team a total of X amount of throws and the team with the most points after their pitchers have completed their throws. The team with the most points will win this activity.

Move on to a catching activity for the catchers. Have a team member lob water balloons to the catcher who then must catch them in their catchers mitt. Don't overfill the balloons so they may or may not break upon catching. The goal is to catch as many as they can without breaking them. The most points will be given for unbroken catches, some for caught but broken and no points for missing the balloons altogether.

Finally, the batting crew can take the field. Your batters will have pinatas to hit, blindfolded of course. Make sure the two pinatas are a safe distance away and have the batters start swinging. "Hey batter, batter, batter, swwwwing!" First pinata to be burst gets the most points.

Award your first place trophies and second place ribbons based upon total point scores. You may want to have a special award (like a team baseball cap) as the prize for MVP.

Regardless of the participants age, these games are sure to be a lot of fun. Finish the day with a hotdog buffet, chips and sports drink. Power bars and samples of icy hot (for adult party members) can be incorporated as part of the Baseball theme party favors.

Invitation cards can be in the form of a tower with a small cut-out for the window on the front page. Decorate the front of the card with two yellow braids made from wool or crochet cotton and dried herbs. Another idea is to make your card from paper that can be planted afterward. It will really suit the Rapunzel theme so well.

Decorations and Welcome Activities:

A tower will be one of the main features of a Rapunzel theme party. You can make one from a large, sturdy cardboard box - (ask at your local furniture shop for the type that new fridges and cookers are packed in). Using a craft knife, cut out a window on the upper part of the box; paint the box (using brown and yellow or grey and black paint) to resemble bricks.

Make two braids from thick yellow wool or yellow stockings and attach them to the inside of the "window sill". Decorate the sides of the cardboard box with lots of ivy or branches to give the illusion of thorn bushes growing against the tower walls.

Make a wig with long braids from yellow wool for every girl that will attend the party and make cardboard crowns for the boys.

Place a small table or chair inside the tower and let the birthday child hide inside on the day of the party. When the party guests arrive, they have to call "Rapunzel, Rapunzel let down your long hair", whereupon the birthday child will appear in the window, let the attached braids fall down and then hand out the wigs and crowns to her party guests. The guests will then be led to the party table where they will enjoy some witches' froth while they are waiting for Rapunzel to appear after the prince has saved her.

Table Decorations:

Choose green, yellow and lilac colours for the table decorations - (green for the forest and herbs in the garden, yellow for Rapunzel's hair and lilac for the rampion flowers). Decorate the table with herbs or other leaves and twigs. If you have lavender or any other purple/lilac flowers blooming in your garden, add this too.

Use stiff cardboard to make towers, paint and decorate as desired, then fill with candy or crisps and place them among the leaves and flowers on the table.

Rapunzel Birthday Cake:

The birthday cake can be in the form of a castle or you can make a faux cake by using empty cereal boxes to shape a castle. Cover the whole structure with aluminium foil, spread a layer of icing all over. Press biscuits and candy all over to cover the structure until the desired effect is achieved.

Other party snacks can consist of dainty sandwiches with coloured and flavoured butters; add some sturdier food like cheesy polony and egg pies for the lads.

Rapunzel Party Games:

If you have a sturdy wall in your garden, ask your husband or another adult to attach a few rope ladders to the top edge or just make a few knots in thick rope and attach firmly to tree branches.

The party guests can also play hide and seek and adapt the call of the enchantress and the prince ("Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair") to suit their names. The child that is out, must then go into the cardboard box tower and let down his or her hair - (the braids that were attached to the window sill).

Rapunzel Party Activities:

Keep the party guests busy with some craft activities that can also double up as party favours. The story of Rapunzel happened as a result of the rampion herb that her mother craved during her pregnancy, so crafts that center round gardening or nature will be suitable for this party. The kids can make mini gardens or terrariums, leaf prints or seed pictures that they can take home after the party.

As a last treat, let the children watch the "Barbie as Rapunzel" movie or read them the Rapunzel story written by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Children love fairy tale stories and with a little imagination you can easily turn your child's birthday party into his or her own fairy tale.
