Thanksgiving is a particularly great time of year. Every November, this occasion is celebrated as the start of the official holiday season. In the United States, as the title of the holiday indicates, it is a time for us to give thanks for all the wonderful things we have in our lives. Obviously, these wonderful things also include people, and so it is a good time to show appreciation for all those that are there for you. This is probably why Thanksgiving is traditionally a day for families to get together and enjoy each other's company.
A lot of this appreciation is expressed through food. Conventionally, a huge meal is prepared with all the trimmings, allowing everyone to set down at the table together for a warm meal as cold November weather starts outside. Traditional foods are included in the meal, such as turkey, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and warm pumpkin pie.

This meal creates a wonderful opportunity for everyone to converse and enjoy each other's company as they enjoy the food. However, once kids eat their last bite of pie, they can start to get bored. As we've all experienced, a bored child is potential trouble, so it's important that you have something available to keep the kids entertained. Thanksgiving can sometimes be particularly trying in that aspect, as children have a lot of free time with the four or five day long vacation they have from school. To help you keep the peace, and to keep everyone happy, please consider one of the following suggestions for entertainment.
Stuffed Animal Playground
One great way to prevent jealousy and arguing is to make sure each child has their own toy with a stuffed animal playground. Get a few plush animals and gather them together. It can be especially helpful to choose a theme, say for example, forest animals, to give a little nudge to their imaginations. These forest animals can include stuffed foxes, little stuffed bunnies, stuffed raccoons, and even teddy bears. The children could then invent wonderful stories. For example, such as how the animals prepare for the winter season by gathering and hiding food. They could even put on a play for you while everyone is having dessert!
Holiday Coloring Books
If you want a quiet activity that will allow you and the other grownups to converse in peace, coloring books can be the way to go. This activity is particularly good for young children. Let them get creative and play with crayons. Buy a couple of holiday or winter themed coloring books. These books can feature such items as a turkey, a pilgrim, a reindeer, Santa Clause, a menorah, a snowman or anything else you can think of that's appropriately themed. This quiet, safe activity can be a lot of fun for the kids as they enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
Guessing Games
Another great option works the best for older kids. Find and cut out some basic pictures of objects from a magazine. These objects can include animals, foods, cars, plants, or clothing items. Then stick them to cardboard so each picture has some weight and is easier to draw blindly out of a box. Once each child draws a picture out the box with their eyes closed, then the other kids can try and guess what their picture is with clues!
